Plumber Salt Ash

Salt Ash sits beside Medowie, and Medowie Plumbing Co covers its plumbing on the same run. The ground sets the work: septic tanks in sand above a high water table, drains that choke on paperbark roots, and bore water that marks every tap. Every job is quoted at a fixed price first.

Plumber installing a strip drain beside a sliding door

Sand, Iron Bores and Salt Off the Dunes

On-site systems in shallow ground

Homes on these blocks run septic systems in sand with the water table sitting close beneath, and the disposal field needs proper siting and design just to do its job. At the last census, Salt Ash counted 1,103 people across 376 dwellings, nearly all separate houses, so almost every address has its own on-site system.

Roots and sand on the long lines

Paperbark roots chase moisture along the private lines serving the rural blocks, and fine dune sand packs into every joint those roots have cracked, so a choke can rebuild within weeks of a clear.

Iron and salt

Bore water out here is iron rich, staining taps and laundry and choking filters, while salt drifting in off the Stockton Beach dunes ages any valve or fitting left out in the weather.

The Jobs That Come Up Out Here

Four pages cover the work, each one shaped by how a fault usually shows up on this ground:

Plumber collecting gear from the ute toolbox

Emergency plumbing

For poly supply lines that have baked and split between bore and house, storm surcharge pushing sheet water across yards, and hot water units that die on a cold night.

Plumber feeding a drain camera into a pit at a commercial unit

Blocked drains

Where dune sand has found its way into a broken joint or paperbark roots have grabbed a private line, cleared with the jetter and then filmed so you can see the line is actually clean.

Plumber finishing a continuous-flow gas hot water install

Hot water

For the big households these wide homes hold, from electric storage through to heat pump and solar, with a temporary tank on hand while a replacement is sorted.

Gas fitter checking an oven connection

Gas fitting

For cooktops, ovens and BBQ hook-ups on the acreage blocks, plus gas leak checks on lines that run far out to sheds and stables.

The work reaches from the homes around Salt Ash Public School and the community hall out to the acreage holdings on the estate's back roads. Nelson Bay Road cuts straight through the middle, and holiday traffic on the way to the Bay can slow any visit, so we plan around it.

Questions From the Acreage Blocks

Do septic systems on sandy ground need different work?

Yes. Where groundwater sits shallow, the disposal side of a system is often mounded to lift effluent clear of the wet zone, which leaves the drain from the house little fall. We check that line end to end before quoting, so you know whether it needs a clear or a repair.

Why do drains block again soon after a clear?

Because two causes keep working after the choke is gone: sand migrates back through whatever joint has failed, and paperbark roots push fresh hair into the same line. A camera check after the clear shows whether the pipe is sound, or whether relining is the fix that lasts.
